Access to the area
During the construction phase the area within a 500 metres "safety zone" around any manned position (i.e where construction work is ongoing highlighted by the presence of a construction vessel) was in effect and Sea trafic had to take notice of any construction vessel, especially vessels involved in diving activities and respect the 500 metres safety zone.
During the entire construction period a 50 metres safety zone was in effect around any unmanned turbine tower.
Now that the wind farm is put into normal operation the 50 metres safety zone around any of the turbine towers has to be maintained. The wind turbines are equipped with marker lights to warn maritime and air traffic.
Marking to warn air traffic Eight of the turbines are equipped with red aviation warning lights to warn the air traffic in the area. Marking to warn sea traffic Eight of the turbines are equipped with four yellow marine signal lanterns. The lanterns on the four corner turbines flash every 5 seconds with a 5 nautical mile nominal range and the lanterns of the four turbines placed in between in the outer rows of the wind farm flash every 21⁄2 seconds with a 2 nautical mile nominal range. The lanternes will only be flashing when it is dark. Furthermore, the four corner turbines are equipped with fog horns controlled by a visibility meter. Fog signals will sound every 10 seconds when the visibility is 2 nautical miles or less. On shore On shore, the cable laying and rebuilding of the transformer station was carried out and a maintenance depot will be constructed at Whitstable Harbour. The maintenance depot is operated by Vestas and will be used as a base for the routine management and maintenance of the wind farm.
